Texas A&M in the NCAA Tournament: Austin Regional

Austin Regional

1. Texas
2. Indiana
3. Texas A&M
4. Texas Southern
National Seeding: Texas is seeded 13th nationally and is slated to face the winner of the Oxford Regional.
Player to Watch: Nolan Hoffman. Hoffman has made an appearance out of the bullpen in 32 times of A&M’s 59 games.  Odds are you are going to see him multiple times this weekend. When you do, you can feel pretty sure it will be an A&M win.  He leads the SEC in saves but more impressive is that most of his saves are more than an inning of work.
Top 3 Themes in This Regional:

1. Lone Star Rivalry renewed?  UT and A&M have history you could say.  They were long time rivals in the SWC and that continued into the Big 12.  They aren’t guaranteed to even face each other this regional, but as someone that grew up watching (and playing) SWC baseball, I hope to see them tee it up 3 times.  It is always fun to see 2 schools who genuinely hate each other meet up with a lot on the line.
2. Can Doxakis replicate his SEC tourney performance?  His final 2 starts in the regular season were good but his start against Auburn in Hoover was sensational.  He carried a no-hitter into the 8th against Auburn and finished the game with 10 strikeouts and no walks (2 hit batters just keeps them honest).
3. Is Indiana a worthy 2 seed?  Their resume is just OK.  They won 38 games against a really weak schedule and finished 5th in the country’s 6th best conference.  No, they aren’t what you would expect a 2 seed to look like, but they can play.  They have 3 of the top pitchers in the Big 10, they are 3rd in conference batting and they are 2nd in fielding.  That is solid regardless of conference, but we will find out what they are really are in short order.
Texas A&M’s Chances To Win It:  50%  A&M has enough talent to run roughshod through this tournament but they are prone to just not showing up at times.
Why A&M Will Win It:  They limped to the finish line losing weekends to Florida, Arkansas and South Carolina and were on the bubble heading to Hoover.  After going 3-1 they got their mojo back their pitching in order.  They have the most talent in this regional and have the depth needed to win it.
What is Success for A&M?  Winning the regional and getting to a Super Regional.
