Georgia in the NCAA Tournament: Athens Regional

Athens Regional

1. Georgia
2. Duke
3. Troy
4. Campbell
National Seeding:  Georgia is the 8th seed in the tournament – the last protected seed.
Player to Watch:  Aaron Schunk pulls double duty for UGA playing 3B and is the hammer at the back of the bullpen.  He is hitting .304 starting every game this year and is 8 for 9 in saves.
Top 3 Themes in This Regional:
1. Georgia’s home field advantage:  This is the first time UGA has hosted a regional in a decade.  You can expect to see a boisterous crowd at Foley Field this weekend.

2. The Keegan McGovern show:  The 1st-Team All-SEC senior is the straw that stirs the drink for this Georgia team.  He leads the team in average, home runs, and slugging percentage and has led them back to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 7 years.

3. Is Duke the real deal?  The Blue Devils won a series at Vanderbilt to start the season and then faced a soft non-conference schedule.  Duke won a series on the road at FSU and beat UNC at home in-conference but also dropped weekends to Georgia Tech, NC State and Wake Forest. Duke is good enough to beat anyone in the country yet vulnerable enough to go 2 and Q.
Georgia’s Chances To Win It: 70%. The Dawgs should be a strong favorite to win their home regional.
Why Georgia Will Win It:  Georgia isn’t your standard top-end SEC team – they lack an elite ace.  But the Bulldogs have really good pitching and a lot of it. Pitching depth is the difference this weekend.

What is Success for Georgia? Omaha.  Realistically, though, getting to their first Super Regional in a decade would be a success for UGA. But as a national seed playing at home, it really is Omaha or Nothing.
