Florida announced Thursday that they’d go with the regular rotation for the Mississippi State series. Shortly after posting it to FloridaGators.com, O’Sullivan announced a new rotation of Tommy Mace, Brady Singer, and Jackson Kowar. The Two Idiots weigh in on what Kevin O’Sullivan should do.
How should Florida set up their rotation this weekend?
TOWNS: I would start Dyson or Leftwich on Thursday to start the series. If O’Sullivan doesn’t feel comfortable with either of those then run someone out there that he is comfortable with. One of those guys has to step up and now is the time to see who can handle the bright lights.
The timing is right to have someone else start the series because you can keep Singer and Kowar on their regular schedule. I would also limit their pitch count and target 5-6 innings max to get their work in but keep them fresh for the grind starting next week.
At this point you need for someone to step up to give you a better feel for what you really have for a title run.
MONCEAUX: I think the Gators need to have 5 starters this weekend. Let Tyler Dyson start game one but have Brady Singer warm up and be ready to go to start the 5th like it’s an actual start. On Friday, I’d have Jordan Butler start and have Kowar prepped for the 5th inning. And I’d let Leftwich start game 3 like he has been doing.
This way, your regular starters get their work and two additional guys get a start before the SEC Tourney. This would allow O’Sullivan to make some decisions based on actual starts in a tough environment.
The Gators are the most complete team in the country. Their only weakness are the starters beyond Singer and Kowar. In games where Singer and Kowar start, Florida is 23-3. That’s insane. But in all other games, they fall to 18-9 (including 2-4 in their last 6 weekend finales).
Finding a consistent starter to pitch game 3 is vital: in Hoover, in a regional (probably for the regional title), possibly a deciding-game in a Super Regional, and for the most important game in Omaha, Game 3. Why not give Dyson, Butler, and Leftwich all a chance to stake a claim to that spot heading into the SEC Tourney?
